Hunter’s Moon
October’s full moon is called the Hunter’s Moon. The Hunter’s moon originates from the belief that this moon was a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold months by hunting for food.
It’s believed this is the best time to hunt as the animals are fattening up for winter. When the Harvest Moon was at its peak all the farmers cleared their fields, making it easier for the hunters to spot animals.
The Hunter’s Moon like the Harvest Moon, rises just about the same time—around sunset—for several evenings in a row.
This moon may appear larger and more orange, much like the Harvest Moon.
The Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon, meaning it can occur in either October or November.
Fun Fact
The Harvest Moon and the Hunter’s Moon are unique and are not directly related to the names tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore or restricted to a single month. Instead, they are tied to an astronomical event: the Autumn equinox! -Old Farmers Almanac-
